Every other month, Animation Resources shares a new Reference Pack with its members. They consist of an e-book packed with high resolution scans and video downloads set up for still frame study. Make sure you download the Reference Packs before they’re updated. When it’s gone, it’s gone!

Animation Resources is growing. Since we are a non-profit organization, all of the money we take in from dues gets spent on our projects. So as we get more members, we share more wonderful material with them. Here’s an overview of what you will find in RefPack042…

Our volunteers are back to work scanning fantastic art reference again. This time we are sharing the first volume of Hokusai Manga. Katsushika Hokusai was arguably the greatest artist Japan ever produced. Best known for his monumental set of woodblock prints titled Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, his career spanned more than 75 years, and in his lifetime he produced more than 30,000 paintings, sketches and woodblock prints. Japan was closed to the Western world while Hokusai was living and working, but it didn’t take long after Japan’s borders were opened to the world for his fame spread to the West. He is now regarded as one of the greatest artists in the entire history of art. The importance of these little sketch books can’t be overestimated. Hokusai Manga is revered for its vitality, innovative compositions, naturalism and draftsmanship.

Next up is an episode of the Linus The Lionhearted show, including the original commercials. Linus the Lionhearted bears the dubious distinction of being the only Saturday Morning cartoon series to be cancelled because a law was passed against it! In the International section, we feature part three of Roman Davydov’s five part series based on Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book…

…along with a 1947 Russian animated short titled, The Champion…

…a charming Russian puppet film called How To Get Big…

…and another wacky episode of The Strange Adventures of Koziolek Matolek from Studio Miniatur Filmowych in Poland.

The Early Anime section, which is curated by JoJo Baptista, includes an episode of Space Boy Soran from 1965…

…and a comedy series titled Thunder Boy Pikkari B.

And that’s not all! In the Slapstick Section, we are beginning a three part series that outlines the working methods of Charlie Chaplin.

As a bonus, we feature three rare shorts from the Columbia studios, courtesy of Animation Resources Advisory Board Member Steve Stanchfield.

Animation Resources Board Member David Eisman presents a series of breakdowns illustrating morphing.

And Animation Resources’ Director of Programming Davey Jarrell has a new podcast for us where he interviews educator Taber Dunipace.

Whew! That is a lot of amazing stuff! At Animation Resources, our Advisory Board includes great artists and animators like Ralph Bakshi, Will Finn, J.J. Sedelmaier and Sherm Cohen. They’ve let us know the things that they use in their own self study so we can share them with you. That’s experience you just can’t find anywhere else.
