Patterson had a 7 decade long career in the animation industry. He spent most of his career as an animator, but near the end he served as an animation director, supervising director and a timing director. He worked in several studios including Charles Mintz, Disney, MGM, Grantray-Lawrence, and lastly Hanna-Barbera.

Brother to animator Don Patterson.

Education/Training

Career Outline- Started out in his teens as an inker at the Charles Mintz studio in 1929. He became a full animator in the 1930 and stayed until 1939. At this point he moved to the Disney studio where he animated on “Pluto” shorts and on “Fantasia” and “Dumbo” features. 1941 brought him to MGM were he animated on “Tom and Jerry.” In 1954 he opened his own studio Grantray-Lawrence Animation. His own studio subcontracted on “Tom Cat”, “the Jetsons”, and “Mr Mcgoo.” In the sixties his studio landed two big hits with “Marvel Superheroes” and “Spider-man.” His studio closed in 1968 and he returned to H-B and directed Fred Claver Productions and Sanrio Productions. In 1976 he ended up at Hanna-Barbera and by 1985 he became Vice President of the Animation Direction for all shows. He retired in 1993 but continued with freelance work on occasion.

Responsible for animating Jerry in the famous Gene Kelly dance number in the 1945 feature “Anchors Aweigh.”Spent much of 1946 in England where he helped the J. Authur Rank Organization with setting up an animation studio. “Trash of the Titans” was an episode of Simpsons were the commissioner of sanitation is named Ray Patterson.
