Creative League Chaplin Gold Rush Screening

“The Gold Rush” is the first feature-length comedy by Charlie Chaplin which charts a hapless prospector’s search for fortune in the Klondike and his discovery of romance (with the beautiful Georgia Hale)—forever cemented the iconic status of Chaplin and his Little Tramp character. Shot partly on location in the Sierra Nevadas and featuring such timeless gags as Chaplin’s dance of the dinner rolls and meal of boiled shoe leather, The Gold Rush is an indelible work of nonstop hilarity. We will screening a brand new high definition restoration of the original silent 1925 film with a specially prepared orchestral score.

This program offers a detailed visual and intellectual analysis of Goya masterpieces, including Witches in the Air, The Third of May and The Dream of Reason, as well as examples of his early work and portraiture such as The Duchess of Alba, The Nude Maja and The Clothed Maja. Hughes gives an insight into the enormous changes that took place in Goya’s work in the course of his life: the shift from light to dark.

In Spain, he travels to Goya’s native Aragon and in Madrid he is seen visiting galleries, palaces and churches where Goya’s works are on display. In New York Hughes calls on the American painter, Leon Golub, who shares his fascination for Goya, and elicits a contemporary artist’s perspective on the Spanish master s work.

Hughes professes himself incapable of summing up Goya’s achievements neatly, but concludes that to meet Goya is still to meet ourselves.

Creative League: Tashlin Night May 19th

Creative League Tashlin Night

A lot of current animators are dipping their toes into the arena of live action filmmaking. But for some reason, when they make a live action film, everything they learned making animated cartoons seems to go right out the window. Not so with Frank Tashlin

Tashlin worked at Terry-Toons, Van Beuren, Iwerks, Columbia and Disney, but he is best known for his cartoons for Warner Bros. He directed Daffy Duck and Private Snafu cartoons, and his style was marked by clear comic staging and fast action.

In 1948 Tashlin left animation to become a live action gag writer for the Marx Bros, Lucille Ball, Bob Hope and Red Skelton. But his most productive collaboration was with Jerry Lewis…

Creative League Tashlin Night

On Saturday May 19th at 7 pm, the Animation Creative League will be hosting a screening of one of Tashlin’s greatest films, “Who’s Minding The Store” in a high definition Vistavision transfer.

“Who’s Minding The Store” is a Warner Bros cartoon come to life. The incredibly exaggerated gags pile one on top of each other at a rapid pace, leading to a finale that will have you doubled over with laughter. Lots to learn from this film!

OK… I can hear you saying, “I HATE Jerry Lewis!” But give this film a chance. There is a good reason why Lewis was one of the most popular and beloved comedians of his day. If you don’t believe me, just check out this quick clip from “Who’s Minding The Store”…
