One of the most remarkable skills that great puppeteers and animators share is the ability to crawl inside their character and really inhabit it. It’s a mysterious process, and many of the best aren’t able to really articulate how they do it. I know everyone is in a hurry lately, but please take a half an hour and watch this film. It will be good for your creative soul. In particular pay attention to the interview segments with Fokin. In a very plain-spoken way, he explains his creative process and how the personalities of his characters emerge. Animators can learn a lot from puppeteers.
