For the past decade, Animation Resources has been serving artists working in the fields of animation, cartooning and illustration. Our volunteers and members have pulled together to raise the bar for our art form, and it’s time to celebrate… It’s Members Appreciation time again!

During the month of February, Animation Resources expresses our appreciation to our members with a very special Reference Pack, and we invite you to become a member too. Every other month, you will receive a brand new Reference Pack which consists of high resolution downloadable e-books packed with fantastic artwork, rare animated films from our collection, documentaries, podcast discussions and more!
For our annual members, we have even more. Inbetween RefPacks, we rerun a past RefPack in our Bonus Archive. This means that every year, as an annual member you will be receiving 12 full Reference Packs a year, instead of just 6! This only applies to General and Student membership, not Quarterly members. So if you are on a quarterly billing cycle, you might want to consider cancelling your Quarterly membership and re-joining as a General member.
We also host “Animated Discussions” as members only video programs. Past Podcasts are archived along with our Reference Packs and on the Bonus Archive page for annual members.
Every year or two, Animation Resources provides more benefits for its members, and we occasionally raise our dues a little to allow us to continue to expand our offerings. But if you join today, we promise that General Membership dues will never increase as long as you maintain your membership.

UPDATE: Upcoming RefPack / Member Appreciation Month

Things have been quiet around Animation Resources lately, but that isn’t because we aren’t working… We have a couple of large projects that we’ve been working on for over a year that will be released in our next Reference Pack. One is a subtitled version of a rare European animated feature, and the other is a two hour video seminar on acting for animation that we have been planning and putting together for the past couple of years. Both of these projects will be included in the February Reference Pack.

We always pull out all the stops to make the February Reference Pack special because that is our Members Appreciation Month. It’s when we throw open the doors and invite people to join our organization and express our thanks to our loyal members for their support over the past years. We’ll have more information on all of this soon. Thanks for your patience.

Caricature: George Grosz- The Hanging Judge of Art

My Drawings expressed my despair, hate and disillusionment, I drew drunkards; puking men; men with clenched fists cursing at the moon. . . . I drew a man, face filled with fright, washing blood from his hands. . . I drew lonely little men fleeing madly through empty streets. I drew a cross-section of tenement house: through one window could be seen a man attacking his wife; through another, two people making love; from a third hung a suicide with body covered by swarming flies. I drew soldiers without noses; war cripples with crustacean-like steel arms; two medical soldiers putting a violent infantryman into a strait-jacket made of a horse blanket. . . I drew a skeleton dressed as a recruit being examined for military duty. I also wrote poetry. -Grosz

During the first decades of the 20th Century in Europe, the dividing lines between commercial art and fine art did not exist. Easel painters would doodle caricatures in the street and submit political cartoons to satirical magazines like Le Rire in France and Jugend in Germany. All of these various genres of art fell under the domain of the “artist” and no genre was seen as superior to any other.

One of the most gifted artists to come out of Weimar era Germany was George Grosz. Grosz drew cartoons and caricatures for “Simplicissimus”, as well as earning acclaim for his expressionist paintings. Caricature was part and parcel of his style, no matter what genre he worked in.

In Grosz’s Germany, everything and everybody is for sale. All human transactions, except for the class solidarity of the workers, are poisoned. The world is owned by four breeds of pig: the capitalist, the officer, the priest and the hooker, whose other form is the sociable wife. He was one of the hanging judges of art. -Robert Hughes
